Over time, as you continue reading, praying, and seeking understanding, other Scriptures begin to bring clarity. Truth found in the Bible works together in harmony, and deeper understanding develops as you continue learning. One of the most important principles in studying the Bible is to seek truth from Scripture rather than trying to confirm beliefs you already hold. The Bible should define truth for us. The Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—focus on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and provide a strong foundation for understanding the rest of the Bible.
Each Gospel offers a unique perspective. Matthew often highlights themes that would be familiar to a Jewish audience. Mark is more direct and action-focused. Luke provides detailed accounts and historical context, including the birth of Jesus. John focuses deeply on who Jesus is and the personal relationship He offers. Beginning here can help create clarity and confidence as you continue studying.
Reading the Bible helps you become familiar with its message, while studying the Bible involves taking time to reflect, ask questions, and look for connections between passages. Studying often includes comparing Scripture with other Scripture to better understand meaning.
Bible study should also be approached prayerfully. Understanding Scripture is mainly a spiritual and not an intellectual process. While our minds are fully engaged when we study the Bible it is the spiritual work God does within us that matters.

When you approach Scripture with humility and faith, you place yourself in a position to receive understanding.
Trying to understand the Bible through intellect alone will only go so far. But when you approach Scripture believing that God speaks through His Word, your understanding continues to grow over time.
